Sam and Fuzzy Q & A:  RPG Edition
Got a question you want answered? Just drop me an email with "Q & A" in the subject line!

First of all, guys... wow! I was pretty nervous going into this kickstarter. I knew it was a new genre for me, and even though I thought we'd put something pretty cool together, I wasn't sure if folks would be into it.

But as of right now, our project is already 80% funded! That's amazing. Thanks so much for your support!

I've gotten a lot of questions about the project, either through the AMA we did today or by email. So I thought I'd use today's Q & A to publically answer some of the more popular questions.

"When does the game take place? Will the book need to be updated to keep up with changes in the comic?" -Sara

Early on, we decided to set the RPG during the pre-Noosehead era of the strip. The state of the Underground was barely explored during the comic at that time, so it felt like a great place to expand on. Plus, it allowed us to set the game pre-Vampire exposure, and to have a giant, completely criminal Ninja Mafia. (Most likely led by a certain appliance.)

That said, we think the rules of our game are sufficiently well explained that a GM could easily mod it to take place during other eras of the strip. For example, if you wanted the game to take place post Vampire exposure, you could... you'd just want to adjust the strangeness/quarantinability level of the vampire species to be the same as humans, rather than the same as other mid-range, "disguisable" inhumans.

"In the Kickstarter, you said that you had "lots of ideas" for what you might do if the project receives more than the minimum amount of funding. Given that you're at 75% funded in under 24 hours, that seems likely. Could you tell us some of these ideas?" -Fiazba

We'll talk more about specific stretch goals as we get closer to funding. I hate to start bringing them up too early, because even though we are doing really well, it just makes me feel like I'm being a little presumptuous! That said, I do think there is some room to expand the project in fun ways... even though it's already pretty big as is!

All the most frequently appearing species from the comic -- humans, vampires, wolfpeople, sentient robots, Buddy Bears, grrbils and other sentient rodents, and Catopians -- are currently playable, but I'd like to add some of the more obscure ones as well if we get the chance. Like Jess' people, the shape-shifting slugs! That would let us work in a cool disguise mechanic we had brainstormed, and also give me a chance to flesh out more about them in the lore section.

I'd also love to add a second sample campaign -- Shannon wrote a pretty amazing initial one, delving deep into the sinister history of SanPresto, and I'd love to do that again in a different corner of the S&F universe.

And of course, we're also curious what kinds of things YOU would like to see in the game! We're going to start spilling on the current contents of the gamebook next week, and once we do, we'd love to hear what kinds of game and lore elements you'd be most interested in seeing added.

"One of the things I love about the NMS era of Sam & Fuzzy is the ever expanding mythos and world building, so naturally I'm pretty pumped about the guide portion of this Kickstarter. How deep into the SnF lore does it go and how much does it expand?" -Joopac

Because The Underground RPG is set in the pre-Noosehead era, and focuses on establishing the state of the world, the Underground, and the various different species during that time period... as well as some of the history of how they all got to that point.

The first section of our book is dedicated to setting the stage the Sam and Fuzzy universe. After explaining what the Underground is, why it was created, and who enforces the divide, it is primarily a catalog of influential factions and players in the above and belowground worlds. It delves into many of the organizations and leaders included in the Committee, as well as many of the independent non-Committee rival powers. (Like the Grrbils, for example.) Many of these factions -- like the robots and wolfpeople -- have barely been explored in the actual comic. Others, like the Cyborg Mafia, are just explored in more detail.

Later in the book, there are also guides to monsters and creatures, major locations and cities, and that sort of thing. And then there's one really big sample campaign that delves into some of the backstory about SanPresto! (Although if you're planning on playing that campaign instead of GMing it, you won't want to read that part directly, or you'll spoil the story!)

All right! That is a wrap for this week, my friends. Come back next week, which will bring both more comics and more info about the mechanics of our game project. Cheers!

Kickstarter for The Underground: A Sam and Fuzzy RPG has begun!

Yes, today is the day, my friends! The RPG kickstarter has arrived!

I am super pumped about this project! It's backed to the gills with Sam and Fuzzy art and world building stuff, but it's also just a really fun tabletop RPG with a lot of room for creativity and comedy... one that I think even non-Sam-and-Fuzzy-reading gamers and non-gaming Sam and Fuzzy readers will dig.

Plus, the project launch will also brings the rad live action Sam and Fuzzy short film that was made to help promote it! I'm really looking forward to hearing what you all think about it!

Imminent Roleplay

It is true, my friends... this Wednesday, we'll be launching our kickstarter for The Underground: a tabletop role-playing game set in the world of Sam and Fuzzy!

The folks from Damocles Thread Development and I have been working on this project for nearly two years now. They've focused on creating a unique gameplay system tailored to the style of my work, where a character's ability to mentally deal with weirdness is as important as their ability to physically deal with force.  Meanwhile, I've been busy writing and illustrating a massive guide to the Sam and Fuzzy universe, expanding on the characters, organizations, and world in a way that I seldom get to in the comic itself.

Our goal was to make The Underground double as both a fun game and a cool illustrated guidebook... something that would have appeal whether you were a Sam and Fuzzy reader, a tabletop gamer, or both. And I think we've pulled it off! With you're support, I think we'll be able to make something pretty special.

Our kickstarter goes live on Wednesday, and with it comes more info about our game mechanics, more cool artwork, and one really awesome live-action ninja mafioso battle film. But in the meantime, here's a look at some of our game's playable species! (And yes, that included Buddy Bears):
