Cool but Rude

Longtime readers will probably remember Candice's tenure as the undercover ninja mafioso "Sexxica", who hid her true intentions behind a bunch of incredibly lazy character tropes. (Aaron, Ox, and Scott were also all pretty trope-tactular, but unlike Candice, were probably not doing it on purpose.)

I picture the low-level Ninja Mafia of this era as being overrun by ninja fanboys who took their favourite childhood 80s cartoons a little too seriously. So it wouldn't surprise me to see they tended to hire new members with the same criteria one might use to cast a hyper-cliched action or superhero team. "Well, this squad already has a leader and a grumpy renegade, but we have an opening for the 'the brains' position. Can you wear a pair of goggles and say a lot of expository dialogue?"

Our next comic arrives on Wednesday. See you then, team!

Sam and Fuzzy Q & A:  Recruitment Edition
Got a question you want answered? Just drop me an email with "Q & A" in the subject line!

"I was wondering if you would be open to making art prints/posters of the Ninja Mafia 'We Want You' poster? I would love to buy that, and I think maybe other people would too?" -Agni

A couple of people asked about this today! (The poster in question appears in the last panel of Wednesday's comic, in case any of you missed it.) For the purpose of a stand-alone poster, I guess I'd probably word it:

THE NINJA MAFIA WANTS YOU!
*not necessarily you specifically

And I'd do my best to ape the art style of those old Uncle Sam posters. What do you guys think? If it's a thing a bunch of folks want, I'm sure I could figure it out!

" 'Brain'? 'Hart'? Are we going to see 'Leng' and the twins 'Gal' and 'Bladder'?" -Jeremy

I admit, when I picked the name "Hart", the decision was definitely influenced by the many Sam and Fuzzy readers I've met at conventions who have mistakenly read "Brain" as "Brian".  "Draw me a Brian!" they'll say. It always cracks me up a little.

Since Brain is an organ name that looks like a person name, I figured I'd make Fridge's "real" moniker a person name that sounds like an organ name. Symmetry! (Sort of.) And as for the other demons' names, well... you'll have to wait and see if any of them ever come up!

"Have you ever read "Astérix and Obélix" at any point in your life?" -Dan

I sure have! I'm not sure how widely read they are in the US (my understanding is not especially), but they are pretty widely available up here in Canada! Growing up, all the libraries in town had dozens of the Astérix volumes (and Tintin, as well), and I diligently read all of 'em several times. As a kid, I loved adventure comic books that weren't about superheroes, so Astérix was right up my alley.

It's been a while since I picked one up, and as of yet, I haven't read any of the newer books with the new creative team that took over after Uderzo retired. But I actually just watched the most recent film (Asterix: The Land of the Gods) a few weeks ago, which put these characters back on my mind after not thinking about any of them for a while. I was pretty impressed with how accurately it captured the tone of the books! (There are, for those who don't know, a lot of really bad Astérix movies.)

That's a wrap for this week, team. I got a lot of questions this week, so if I didn't get to yours yet, fret not... I may well just be saving it for next time. See you on Monday!

Farce

Sorry for the slightly late comic today, friends! (32 minutes late, to be precise.) Had a few technical difficulties over here this evening. But all is well now! So here, have a comic to celebrate.

Our next comic arrives on Friday, and so does a new round of reader Q and A! As always, if you've got a question you'd like me to answer, just pop it in an email with "Q and A" in the subject line. I can't answer every one I get -- sometimes simply for spoiler reasons! -- but I do my best to post as many as I can.
