Sam and Fuzzy Q & A: Eye 2 Eye Edition
Got a question you want answered? Just drop me an email with "Q & A" in the subject line!
"The tar monster has three sets of eyes. Does each set correspond to someone specific on the inside? Or do they all shift around?" -James
They do! I think everything is a little mixed up on the inside, but the eyes do at least roughly correspond to each internal personality. The bottom set is Hart, the middle set is Brain, and the top set is Candice. Their relative sizes sort of roughly represent their relative levels of influence, which is why Hart's as the biggest. That said, I have been trying to widden whichever set of eyes corresponds to the person who is currently talking. I didn't really expect anyone to pick up on this, though... I just thought it would be a fun detail.
"Also, how old is everyone these days? How old is Sam? How old is Dev? What about Fuzzy? Oh! And how old is Rexford? (I might argue that Fuzzy is about 15 years old or thereabout. However long it's been his mind was wiped.)" -Lemma
Oh boy. Let's try to figure this out! Sam graduated high school when he was 18. Since then, he spent:
- 1/2 a year at university
- 7 years driving a cab
-1/2 a year working at Bunton's Books
-1 year doing his first tour as a roadie for Noosehead (between the Classic and Noosehead volumes)
-1 year going through the events of the Noosehead volume
-1 year building up NMS (between the Noosehead and Fix Your Problem)
-1 year running NMS during Fix Your Problem, Very Famous, and Under the Influence
-1 year being quarantined underground and rebuilding the Ninja Mafia as a criminal organization (Between Under the Influence and Ruined Everything)
-Roughly 1 year for everything since then!
That would make Sam roughly 32. We did it!
Gert was in first year university at the same time as Sam, so she's probably also 32. I think Dev is 27... she was in second-year university six years ago, and I think she took a year off after grade 12. Meanwhile, roughly 13 years have passed since Eric's mind was wiped and the Fuzzy we know and love was born. And Rexford's mind wipe was (I think) over 500 years ago. How long were either of them around pre-mind wipes? UNKNOWN!
I definitely do not have specific canonical ages chosen for everyone, which is why I'm only able to figure them out for some characters through this elaborate reverse-engineering process. But if you put a gun to my head, Aaron is probably a few years older than Sam, Nic is a year or two older, X and Y are around the same age as him, and Jess is somewhere between 20 and 200.
"In a previous Q amd A you mentioned that Brain and Hart have a degree of control that allows them to touch nonhumans without disintegrating them. Now, most of the members of the (original) Committee were nonhumans who supposedly wiped their own minds. Using a drop of tar as Rexton did to Raphael would have disintegrated them, if we believe the records to be true. Did a demon then perform the mind wipe? This would be a demon that just became aware of not just the existance of the pit but also the codes and therefore the location. Is this a story hole or a plot device?" -Ron
The previous Committee members wiped their minds using quantities of tar that were precisely measured, as Raphael mentions here. What he meant was: the amounts have to be calculated depending on the person you're using it on. The quantity of tar necessary to merely wipe the minds of inhumans, rather than physically damage them, were really tiny. (Tar destablizes and re-absorbs inhumans, but you'd need a reasonable amount to do that... they won't explode on contact with a spec of it or anything like that.)
So, how did they know how much to use? Well, this is where it all gets a little grim. We know the old Committee had been conducting experiments with the tar for some time, learning more about its properties and the effects as they tried to unlock its full potential. Clearly at some point, they also learned how much would wipe an inhuman mind vs how much would dissolve them. You probably don't want to think about exactly how they learned that. Yikes.
We return on Monday with a new comic! See you then, team.
