Knowing is half the battle

Tada! It's done! The very first issue of KNOW is ready for the presses, as is the 50th issue of YES Mag. For those who don't know, I'm the sole graphic designer for both of these children's science magazines... from cover to cover, I create all of the page layouts and some of the illustrations. I'm fiercely proud of KNOW in particular because I got to design it from scratch, and create a pair of cartoon mascots as well.

I've been working for this magazine publisher for over a year now, and it's the best job I've ever had. When you work as a freelance designer, you don't usually get to work on anything as worthwhile as an educational children's magazine. Usually you're just putting together advertisements for Burger World or Static Dynamics Abstract E-Deliverables or whatever. But YES and KNOW really feel like something special. In moments of delusion, I almost feel kind of important for working there!

I'm not getting bonus pay for this little endorsement, by the way. (Although, that would be nice. Ha!) I just really think that these two magazines are cool, and are worth checking out if you know a kid who is interested in science. You can find out more about both magazines here, and you can view a few sample pages in the design and graphics sections of my online portfolio.

These are the fables on my street

Surely no one forgets who Roger is! How could you? HOW COULD YOU?!?

I'm one disc into the fourth volume of Batman: The Animated Series. The collection has all 24 of the "redesigned" episodes made for the New Batman/Superman Adventures block on the WB. These episodes might be old news to everyone else, but not me... after the show left the Fox network I never got to see it again! If anyone else was in the same boat as me, I urge them to pick this set up. Despite the substantial changes to the cast and art direction that accompanied the switch in TV networks, it's still very much the same series at heart. Definitely one of the all-time great American animated TV shows.

Check in, check out

Today brings the final installment of precious, precious Niego. I'm sorry to see it go, but I just know that Jason Sigala is going to rise again with some great new comics, like a crazy cartooning phoenix. It has, like, pens for wings, I guess. Flaming ink breath!

I hope you all have a good weekend. I'll be busy pulling a little overtime to get the next issue of YES Mag ready for the presses, but after that I'm looking forward to finally taking some time off and getting into this whole "holiday" thing!
