Custom Art

Hey Sam (or anyone else reading this),

I figure you're more than a little busy with the Comic Con coming up (as if you aren't busy enough already, I'm sure) but I figured I would try to get in contact with you here about getting some custom art done since email seems a little dodgy. I've sent you email through the two email addresses that you have on your site but haven't gotten any responses. I wasn't sure if you had stopped doing custom art, or if the junk filter was grabbing my emails or what so figured this might be a more permenant way of getting in touch.

Those of you who aren't Sam, anyone tried to get any custom work done recently? Do you all know which email would be best or if one is old and defunct now? Any recommendations would be welcome.

Thanks

I think he's done quick little sketches for people at conventions before.

Yeah, Sam is usually glad to do free, quick pen sketches for folks at cons. If you're asking for a fullout commission, I'm guessing Sam is checking his frontpage email ([email protected]) regularly, since he's keeping up with his Friday Q&As. Try asking him about it at the con if you can get a chance, but also try emailing again, with something nice and obvious in the subject line, like "art commission". It's been a couple years since I had my commission done, but he does fine work.

I've gotten a nice sketch from Sam at a con. Most webcomics people will do fast, crappy sketches at no cost or nicer sketches for money. I paid Sam money (forget how much, $20 I think) and he made this for me:

I think he used to take internet commissions and you could pay even more money to get even better stuff, but that way you probably also have to pay for shipping and such.

If you're going to a con (especially SDCC) I recommend you go buy some sketchbook in a store and have everyone draw in it for you. Much easier to keep track of and stops pages from getting damaged as easily. I recommend getting one that has perforated edges so you can tear awesome ones out and frame them. Also books which flip over the top instead of the sides are good too.

Thanks for the info. I'd stop by the con if I could, there are quite a few people there I would like to talk to, but I am on the east coast and can't make the trip to San Fransisco. I'll wait a bit and send him another email in case the first one got blocked, don't want to send him one immediately and flood his inbox.

Hi Backshoot!

Sorry for not responding to your email yet. As you guessed, I've just been a little swamped with con preps (and also getting ready to move to Vancouver next month) and wasn't quite ready to take on any commission work.

I do draw commissions, though! And I'd be happy to tackle your request as soon as my schedule opens up a little bit.

No problem Sam,

I figured that might be the case and I appreciate you getting back to me. I'll wait a bit and if I haven't heard back from you I'll send you a reminder email (hopefully things will have gotten a chance to settle down). Thanks again for getting back to me.

Sam, I commission you to draw Jack Bauer riding King Kong as they fight the T-Rex's. It would be legendary.

Well I don't know the exact rates, but mine was quoted at $125.

From the emails we exchanged, I'm pretty sure it costs more for more characters (though I got Fuzzy for free).

Just as an estimate for ya.

Speaking of which, Have you sent that yet, Logan? I haven't gotten it yet.
