Firefox 3

Postby Gin » Wed Jun 18, 2008 8:19 pm

I am enjoying the fudge out of this version of Firefox. It doesn't support most of old extensions, but it's full of lots of awesome built-in features. In particular I like to smart address bar, zoom feature, and the new bookmark organizational methods. Also it's pretty.
* If you do not already use Firefox, now is a very good time to switch.
* If you already use Firefox and have some add-ons that you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT, check compatibility first.
* If you already have Firefox and do not use many add-ons, now is still a good time to switch.

Things like bookmark organization and zoom tools are great. Also, type something in the address bar right now!

The new address bar is awesome. And I really like the little star that lets you quick bookmark sites. The Mac version still feels half-assed though, and I'm still using Safari.

I noticed a HUGE difference with Firefox 3. Mainly that everytime I tried to open it, it crashed immediately. Then I spent an hour or so looking for someplace I could still download Firefox 2. I found it, saving me from the trauma of losing all my bookmarks. I recommend setting a restore point before installing. Or at least checking to make sure you still have your old setup file.

Why? I mean yeah, Safari 2 kinda sucked, but ever since Safari 3 was released I've been using it exclusively over Firefox (at least when on Mac, Safari for Windows is significantly worse, and Firefox for Windows is significantly better).

Firefox > Opera > EI > Safari.

If I'm not mistaken, it took Safari longer to get tabs than it took EI?

I really like the history menu and the address bar. I'm not much of a fan of the new visual scheme, but I'm naturally resistant to that sort of change (I use the classic theme on Vista, the one that looks like '98).

Actually, the one thing I really like about EI that no other browser seems to do is the (please don't flame me for this) really natural integration into my Vista Home folder (or whatever non-Linux users call the folder that keeps all your personal shit). It would be really nice to know that I could use a universal file format for my bookmarks (.lnk), that if I only had my bookmarks and without admin rights and my own browser I could easily still get to my bookmarks, and that if I move my home folder to a different computer all my bookmarks will just fit into place.

Or, that is to say, I just assume EI does that.

EDIT: I was wrong: EI takes 5% of my paycheck that I'm illegible to ever claim, IE does that other stuff.

Never used safari or opera.. When the shithole that is IE7 came out i was recommended firefox and have never looked back. The tabs the simplistic themes (whitehart anyone) and all the neat addons sold me.. Will have to try version 3.

When on a PC, I started with IE, hated it, then went to Firefox, after Evin recommended it to me. Firefox was fine for a while, but that fat bitch was quite a resource hog, so I tried Opera. And loved it! (I still do love Opera.) However being on a Mac, I've yet to have a single problem with Safari, and the second I have a problem with it, I'll go right back to Opera.

Back when I was running Ubuntu, I used a light version of Firefox.

Does that exist for Windows?

No you didn't, the Linux version of FF2 is just better at not using up all your memory. FF3 is way faster and has better memory management on all OS's.

Jack: What's EI? You mean IE? Safari got tabs before IE (they were in Safari 2, just disabled by default). The reason IE has natural integration into Windows Explorer is that they're actually the same app (the say way Konquerer on KDE is used for both file navigation and internet browsing). In my experience, it doesn't create any useful benefits having it set up this way, and exposes a lot more security risks.

How could one ever consider IE a superior browser to almost anything else available.

It's simple as that, it's simple as that, it's simple as that for your stupid ass.

I started with Breeze on v1/2, then found Whitehart.. Tried looking for something similar thats available on v3, but theres nothing as simple as those.. When it comes to GUI themes: Less is more. I wonder what it takes to make your own theme?

What yall got as themes?
