As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, my Netflix queue is filled with important works of cinema, festival favorites, and foreign masterpieces… that I’m never, ever, going to watch. Because, frankly, after a long week of smothering the life out of the artistic vision of the filmmakers who work for us, all I want to do is sit on my couch with an adult beverage and watch a movie that will be exactly what I expect it to be; something I don’t have to think too hard about.
And I don’t think I’m alone. Sometimes you just want to see the ridiculous destruction of famous landmarks, giant sea creatures devouring low flying aircraft, and lots of gratuitous nudity and violence. Sometimes getting exactly what you were expecting is a good thing. Like comfort food. And birthday sex.
That’s what I really think Asylum films are: Mindless escapism. And crap.
