Pointing out problems with your own race isn't a dick move.

I challenge you to listen ot dave chappelle and not laugh.

There's a difference between good race humour and bad race humour. Dave Chappelle is satirical of his own race, while not constantly reinforcing the racial divide.

Bernie Mac's show is a man behaving like a total ass to his wife, adopted children, and society with the excuse that it's acceptable because that's how his parents treated him and that's how black people can and should act. White people who don't pay attention think that how he acts is standard for black people. Black people use Bernie Mac's relativist excuses as their own.

Chappelle is a man hitting himself over the head with a fish. He doesn't take the views he's expressing on stage seriously, they're as much of a joke to him as they are to the audience. Sure, it's race baced, but it's not harmful.

His comedy certainly wasn't that way, and I'd put money on the fact that he could just be using the show as a satirical platform that's larger than a single joke. I could be wrong and I suppose the effect the show gives off is more important than the actual intent.

Jack, I have to disagree. In The Bernie Mac Show, I have never seen an episode where he ever added any fuel to the fire of this Racial Divide. In fact, he always addresses his audience as America. Not, Black America, or White America. Just America. He's always dealing with issues from his kids, not because they're black kids in a black family but because they're kids. Sure, every now and then you hear him address himself or his wife and kids as black, but when he does this it's rarely in any sort of extreme way that creates any sort of problem. He's probably done more of a service to society than actually hurt it. The fact that his show stayed on the air for so long, and portrayed an American family that just happened to be black, actually shows a huge step forward as a culture. We're seeing more and more programs on TV where the focus isn't just a white family, but a family of any colour. And the fact that these shows stay on the air and do well is fantastic. Any person that contributes to this should be commended for working towards closing the Racial Divide, not criticized because there still is one.

Ok, I guess I'm imterpreting the show in a way that you guys didn't interpret it.

When there are obvious differences between his family and other familys, my interpretation was that this was explained by race, although that was never expressly stated.

It could be that, as a northerner, I don't understand southern culture and as a result see him as being the embodiment of black people, instead of the south.
