A Serious religious debate

Postby Ben » Sun Sep 30, 2007 9:57 pm

Ok so across all the diffrent countries tonnes of diffrent religions have formed. All with there own system of beleifs and gods etc.

Taking all there evidence into account, wich god would win in a fight if it came down to it?
For clarities sake, for multiple god religions I'm simply going with there God of War or simmilar equivilent.
The god from the Bible only gets one entry despite being a diety from three seperate religions, cause he's the same dude.

Ok so who do we have.

Representing the Bible in all its various forms we have
Yahweh
Image
Existing from the begining of time and creating the universe in seven days, he's all powerfull, all seeing, and all loving. The most famous god in Western society, ruling not one, but three distinct religions each with countless subsets. Famous deeds include, slaying all the first born in Egypt, Flooding the world, and apocalyptic prophecies of raining fire and brimstone. Will his love be his downfall? Or will his lack of experience in gold combat from his existence in a mono-athetic religion do him in. Or will his sheer power and beleif in him win through?

Hailing all the way from Norse mythology we have
Odin
Image
Odin the cheif god of the Norse pantheon knows about fighting, the pantheon has at least three seperate gods of war, these gods are all fighting, considering they were worshiped by the vikings this comes as no real suprise. He spent his time gathering an army of worthy warriors that have fallen in battle and was the father to Thor a slightly more famous god of War and Tyr, a god of war so many he managed to do it with only one arm. Lacking the sheer power of some of the other gods, he makes up for it with combat experience as a god that completly lives for war and combat.

From Ancient Greece/Rome
Ares/Mars
Image
One of the least active gods of war. He sat around romancing ladies and getting locked in jars, he has however formed a formideable appearence in modern culture despite his distinctly lacking myths. Not much is known about his actual prowess in battle aside from his reperesntation of the more brutal side of battle in contrast to Athena. An unknown quantiy in the battle, it will be intresting to see if his modern fame will win over through his lack of actual mythalogical prowess.

Representing the Hindu religions massive pantheon of gods.
Murugan
Image
A god of many names, also known as Lord Skanda, Kārttikeya,Arumugam, Shanmukha to name a few of his aliases, does he breath fire, defeat demons, have six faces, have 1 face, all of these and many more according to various ledgends. I'm really trying to be fair about this but Hindi mythology is one of the most confusing things I've ever read, plus if that isn't the most fruity god of war I've ever seen I don't know what is.

For the truley enlightend,
Buddah
Image
While buddah isn't a god in the true sense of the word, his inclusion here is more for completness sake. While he spawned some of the most fearsom warrior monks, he himself was not a fighter, more inclined to want to talk things through then fight. And if he did actully get up to fight, its hard to imagine him being much of a competitor.

The Aztec god
Mixcoatl
Image
Not much is known about him due to the Spanish destroying Aztec society. He fatherd 400 sons (Who all ended up having there hearts eaten) He was known as a great hunter as well as warrior, and like most of the Aztec gods had numerous human sacrafices, a woman would have her head smashed into a rock 4 times then have her throat slit and be decapitated, while a man would display the head to the crowd before he had his heart removed. What he lacks in content in his mytholgies, he makes up for in scary dedicated followers.

I'm well aware there are many more gods then this but I've been typing this post for over an hour.
The racist one.

Why Ares and not Zeus?

Well, what I mean, if you picked Odin, he's the overlord god for Norse, but there are other Gods.

It's simple as that, it's simple as that, it's simple as that for your stupid ass.

I said in the Original post, I chose the respective Gods of War for each religion. The Norse religions just happens to have there cheif god as a god of war.

Seriously researching this I realised how bad arse the norse gods are. Tyr one of the Norse gods of war fed his arm to Fenrir. The dudes an Amputee and could still kick arse. Thats fucking hardcore.

There hasn't been a proper war since the Ancient Greeks were still kickin'. I blame a decline in the warship of Ares, the almighty Olympian God of bloodlust.

See thats what I meant about his lack of stories.

His two main roles in the myths were getting locked in a jar and fucking Aphrodite and getting in trouble for it.

then take the modern interpetation of Ares, take a look at the Ares mini published by marvel, he is probbably the single most bad arse charecter in the Marvel Universe at the moment. Or God Of War with his beard of fire and shit. He is constantly portrayed as one hardcore mother fucker. When he, well really wasn't.

So it makes you wonder, what Ares is more true? Since he's a mythological figure, he really is only shaped by perception, so is it fair to limit him to his exploits in traditional roman stories?

You didn't mention Odin's massive wisdom, which he basically had to trade one of his eyes for. It's a helpful thing to have in a fight.

But seriously, this is an unfair fight. Yahweh is a God of utter perfection, omniscience and omnipotence, whereas all the other gods are based more on humanity itself, possessing weaknesses and foibles. This is no contest. A more interesting battle would matching up various pantheons against each other.

My money's on Norse.

Those 'Pastafarianists' and the like, hell, what about Agnostics?

Just curious, not flaming.

...Maybe a tad flamingly curious...but not like an Altoid.
I would have originally chosen "Ashton" as my user name, BUT...

I'd do the Jenovah's witness thing.
Wake you up at 5 in the morning and asking whether you have considered Atheism.

I'd go for Athena, but she isn't an option, sadly. Athena > Ares

Shit thats right, they worship Agnostica, the pagan god that demands virgin sacrafices every month lest he wrecks havoc upon the unbeleivers.

He was was worshiped greatly in Sparta. This should be enough.

Dammit, it's the first of the month. It's getting harder and harder to find a good virgin on a college campus.
