In an effort to get anyone that has fallen off the irc train back on it. (Myself included) It's time for a new irc thread to share the joy.

For anyone that has not yet hopped on because they are unfamiliar with how to get on irc, I've thrown together a take-you-by-the-hand picture tutorial to walk you through the Trillian irc program.

There're plenty of other programs you can use, such as mIRC or Mac specific ones, which I'm sure others here can explain as well as I. I only have Trillian on my computer right now though, so that's the one I did. You can use it for msn messenger and stuff too apparently, but I just use it for IRC.

Anyway, join us for talk about Pokemon and nudity. Everything seems to come back to those two topics one way or another.

For Mac OS X users:
Download Colloquy.
Click File->New Connection. Enter your desired user/nick name in the nickname field at the top and enter 'irc.irchighwaynet' into the Chat Server box. Check the "Remember this connection box". Click the blue down arrow to expand the preference pane. If you want to use SSL for security, change the Server Port to 9999 and check off "SSL connection". If you're ok with a regular connection, leave SSL unchecked and make sure the server port is 6667 (the default). Enter a username and Real Name into the boxes. Don't actually use your real name, as both of these fields will be visible to others on the server. Leave Server Password blank. If you want it to automatically join the SnF chat room when you connect to the server, hit the + button under Join Rooms and enter #samandfuzzy. Then click Connect. It should now start connecting to the server and the server should show up in your Connections window (hit command+1 if the Connections window isn't visible). If you want Colloquy to connect to irchighway whenever you run the app, check off the checkbox under the * column.


Registering with Nickserv (for any OS/client):
You can register your nickname with Nickserv if noone else has already registered it. This prevents other people from using your name. To do this, type "/msg Nickserv register [password] [email]" except replace [password] with your desired password and [email] with a real email address you have access to. They'll email you a verification email with instruction on what to do to finalize your registration. From now on, every time you log in or change your nick you'll need to type /nickserv identify [password] to log in. Some apps, like Colloquy, will prompt you for the password when you log in and can remember it and submit it for you every time you use the nick.

No don't give up! I'll write up detailed instructions on the use of mIRC later, it's the simplest one to use in my experience.

I don't like being required to sign up for all kinds of things I'll probably never use. Plus once the initial device was running on my computer, it gave not an "IRC" option. Thus, I presume I can't continue.

You don't HAVE to sign up for anything. There's no registration required. What "initial device" are you talking about?

If she's using Trillian, that confused me too. It took me a little bit of hunting to find the IRC connection option and enable it. I'd point out where it is, but I'm on my Mac side and I don't remember how to get to it off the top of my head.

This seems to be pointlessly complex. I've been to forums where their chatrooms were just a "click here" scenario and you were ready to go.

Kewsh n' me use mirc with the noname script installed - http://www.nnscript.de/ (you can grab both there). Adds some new features, colours, auto reconnect, name tagging ect.

FYI, mirc has the option to execute commands on connect. You can easily set it up to do all your nickserv stuff so you don't have to think about it. You can also make fileservers (it used to the original source of piracy and anime subbing for years ) and lots of other nifty things.

Hmmm... Tell me, how knightly is it to give up at the first hurdle...? Seriously now, did you try with Trillian? If so, and there was no "IRC" type for new connections that may be because in the Preferences -> Plugins -> IRC is not checked in. It wasn't for me, so it might be the same for you... C'mon, we could really use some strong moral fiber...
