Honestly I'd be kind of pissed off if I paid good money for a translation and they left all the sound effects in japanese.

Read the two Trigun books the other day, and they both had untranslated sound effects.

Personally, I rather liked it. It wasn't as hard to understand what the effects were as I thought it would be, and not actually reading words like "chirp" and "vroom" and "bang" seemed to make the sounds ring a little truer in my head.

It wouldn't be hard to understand, I've read plenty of fan translations and they arn't hard to understand at all, but the fact is, if I'm paying for something to be translated, I want them to fucking translate it. Leaving it untranslated is just lazy, sure its no big deal in fan works cause hey, you're getting it for free and they're doing it in there spare time. But these people are being payed for the sole purpose of translating something into english. It's the same as when they leave untranslated words in anime subtitles like Sensei or the Onei-chan or whatever. I can understand it but It's still a piss-weak effort at translating stuff.

Usually when they leave things like onii-chan it's not because they're lazy, but because there is no exact equivalent of that word in English, and so rather than have a shit-ton of fanboys yell at them for translating it wrong, they just leave it in the Japanese (since 99% of anime-watchers know what it is anyway).

How much of what you pay do you figure accounts for words like "chirp" and "drip"? Perhaps you should ask for that money back!

I'd rather they just left the artwork intact and footnoted what the sound effects meant when the situation called for it.

I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But I've bought a big bat. I'm all ready you see. Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!

For those that don't read manga: the reason sound effects are sometimes not translated is that they are sort of embedded into the artwork itself usually, and its hard to translate to English without obscuring and/or recreating part of the artwork, whereas normal speech is usually in a speech bubble so it's relatively simple to erase the Japanese text and replace it with English. For that reason, purists prefer the sound effects are left intact. Plus most scanlations leave them in because it's not worth the effort of manually Photoshopping all the sound effects out and then replacing them with English sound effects.

A friend found a copy of xxxHOLiC Volume 1 in a desk at school and after reading through it a few times loaned it to me. It is pretty interesting and the translator obviously put a lot of work into it. If it turns out to be worthwhile perhaps I shall read more.

(It is pronounced "-holic" for anyone as confused as I was. The "xxx" denotes a variable.)

Oh ok, because I definitely read that as either an action hero or naked people addiction.
