Most Machinamists tackle it like puppetry more than anything else. Not that there's anything wrong with that approach, but it's more limited than actual animation.
Course, using the right tools, digital puppetry could probably be just as sophisticated as full animation.

3D animation is essentialy digital puppetry on its own, the more sophisticated the tools the closer you're going to be to just using a full 3D animation package.
