Pssh, no such thing. You don't have to ride on it anyway, you can feed it leaves!

That's what my cat is for, and I can't ride him, either.

I heard my little cousin blur out some words to me months ago. He was talking about these marble monster things.. I just nodded and smiled..

Skip to present day and I just discovered what he was talking about. Bakugan: Battle Brawlers.

Apparently its the latest craze these days.. last time i looked YuGiOh was the shizznit.. and from what i can tell, Bakugan doesn't stray far from it. Its still based on a card battle game however it incorporates these plastic balls that when rolled over a certain card it flips open and transforms into a creature. This is what caught my attention, so i bought one:

I wanted this bird type one, but they're pretty much sold out EVERYWHERE and I was lucky to find this.. The toy shop even had a sign up saying 'limit of 10 per customer'.. thats shit crazy..

Oh and i dont understand the game.. i barely grasped YuGiOh back in the day.. but as for a toy itself, its a pretty neat little trinket. Its about 1" in diameter when in marble mode. There's a magnet inside the base of the marble which when comes in contact with metal triggers the latch which is holding together all the creatures bits. Its spring loaded so when it triggers it flicks out pretty fast.

My only gripe is that the horn and the feet of the dragon have to be manually opened. I can understand how the feet would be a design problem, but another spring/latch mechanism in the horn wouldnt hurt.

It cost me $10 for a single marble, which was a bit expensive, but I had to see what they were like. You can pay $15 and get 3, but you only know what one of them is... but they were sold out, so it was this or nothing..

My brother has one or two of these, they're pretty nifty but I haven't actually tried the (probably) shallow and nonsense battle system.

It's simple as that, it's simple as that, it's simple as that for your stupid ass.

I learned to avoid anime tie-in collectible games when no one would play Medabots miniatures with me.

(No cards involved!)

The actual game is really stupid honestly. You throw the balls onto magnetic cards or something then increase their attack power by color codes. And then there is the whole pokemon-esque water beats fire etc... I saw the show and the cards once... It's not all that good in my opinion.

At least it's not that one where kids shoot marbles at each other. That didn't look safe to me at all.

They weren't. Seriously, a well aimed or stray shot marble and its high pitch voice for some unfortunate lad. I too, also have one of those.. B-daman they were called.

Its like this Hot Wheels thing i had many many many years ago. It was a hard metal hot wheels car that had a collapsible hook underneath. You would slot in into a drag strip which has a pull back spring loaded contraption in it. Think like what you would find on deck of an air craft carrier or a crossbow. And thats what it was. A Hot Wheels car crossbow. It lauched those cars with tremendous force and I was struck in the leg once. It hurt. Your supposed to shoot it around a track which had tubes and loop de loops, but i didnt have that bit..

Anyway, all those toy tie-in shows were rather crap. Crush Gear, Beyblade, YuGiOh, Bakugan.. all shit. I do remember watching a bit of Medabots.. it wasnt half bad (and if it were the next best thing today, i'd be lapping up them medabots figures)..

But for me, this isnt about the crappy spikey haired recycled anime. Its not about another rock, paper, scissors, my-mums-fatter-than-your-mum-because-i-used-a-weight-power-up-card bullshit card game. This is all about the toys, and these do have a neat little gimmick.

Also to clarify, the figure has the magnet in the base. There are certain 'activator' cards which come with each figure that have a plate of metal inside the card. I have found sometimes it will roll right over the card and not transform.

Yu-gi-oh wasn't bad if you just read the manga. The comic was surprisingly dark and morbid at times, and it didn't even mention the card game till dozens of issues in.

I could never get into any of these games (Yu-gi-oh, Beyblade, etc) because in the back of my mind I would always say that it was just a rip-off of Pokemon or that Magic card game.

Magic slightly came before everything else.

I heard that in the one version of the Yugioh anime, they actually use the monsters to attack and kill people, like for actual military-ish purposes rather than just for a stupid card game. Don't know if that's true or not, but if so it would be awesome. I always wondered why people never just ordered their Pokemon to attack the enemy trainer and be done with it.
