worthless whatnot

Postby Ignatz » Fri Apr 10, 2009 9:16 pm

hey guys. I made a thread some time ago i think, but whatever. I thought I'd show you guys some of my stuff I have been working on as of late. I've got some new stuff from my sketchbook (which I have since named "law"). I also have attained a copy of of illustrator. So I have been learning and designing some t-shirts as well. I would really like to hear what you guys think. One of my hopes is that someday I'll reach a point in which I can manipulate my hand drawn designs and create shirt designs based off them through illustrator. I don't think I am skilled enough, but that's what I am working toward.

i saw explosions in the sky the other weekend at South by Southwest. During their performance, I snagged this photo and later editted it a bit.

This is a pocket-size front design for a t-shirt I made for a fraternity at my school.

really cool! One thing to note, though, on the Cassete graphic. The letters aren't in perspective with the tape. There should be a way to do that in Illustrator, so it's fixable, but's a little distracting from an otherwise awesome graphic.

Yeah that really bothered me as well. I'm pretty new to illustrator; so I was unsure on how to do that. I'm going to have to look that up and see if I can figure something out.

It can definitely be done in Photoshop, and quite easily, too, so it shouldn't be too hard to figure out on Illustrator.

Yeah, but transform works differently in Illustrator. I looked under warp in filter's as well as effects. There's probably a different name for it instead of perspective, or I might be blind.

thanks, bronze. That one is kinda weird. I always liked the idea and some aspects of it, but I was never really pleased with the whole thing.

As for the transforming, I don't know what it is listed as on illustrator. I have a creeping suspion though that you might not be able to directly do it to texts because: on photoshop you have to rasterize the text before you do transform>perspective/warp. But on illustrator if you rasterize the text, you are being somewhat counter-productive since the whole purpose of illustrator is using vectors. It's weird being proficient with photoshop and then switching to using illustrator. It pulls the rug from under you.

Rasterizing Text in Illustrator transforms it from editable text to editable vectors.

1) Type text
2) Right-click > "Create Outlines"
3) Filter > Free Distort

Ta-daaaa.

It bothers me that you can really clearly see where you painted "outside the lines" on the Explosions in the Sky thing. It would be stylish if it didn't look like a mistake.

Ah, thanks gin. And where did I color outside the line on the EIST piece? I originally had it real choppy and not confined, but then I went back and cleaned it up to just the persons. I suppose I missed a spot.

Play with your monitor's brightness settings and you'll probably see it. Either that or open it in photoshop and look at it under different colour channels. There's a big "cloud" hanging to Mr. Blue's left and a lot of noise around Mr. Yellow. Mr. Green's a bit better, but there's still some noise floating around his neck and both shoulders.

That's pretty cool. Did you think about colouring the drum mic's or the cimbals different colours too?

I did, but it would create a conflict with it being so close to the guy on the right (since there is fair space between each guitarist). Also, I decided not to highlight the drums since the drummer wasn't visible. I was actually pretty upset that I did not get a decent photo of the full band.
