I'm not saying I like the Egyptian government the way it is. My point is that the issue with Israel is the most personal for me, and that's my biggest concern. No, I wouldn't be happy, or even apathetic, if the people of Egypt were being abused by their government. But since I was referring to whatever new Egyptian government there will be, or whatever changes they will make, I want them to still remain peaceful with Israel. It's kind of a given that when they change the government, they'll try to change it for the better. They want freedoms, and they want democratic elections, and I'm sure they'll get them. I'm not as sure that relations with Israel will remain stable, so that's where I put my biggest concern.

I'm not concerned that their new government will be more oppressive. The point of the rebellion was to get rid of the oppressive government and create a democratic one with more freedoms and rights for citizens. When I posted my first post, I had disregarded that factor because I thought we all assumed that was a big important change that was gonna happen. I emphasized Israel because that's not as certain a thing.

Now would be a perfect time for us to all go to Egypt and climb the pyramids.

Why is Israel "personal" to you? Just because you're Jewish or do you actually have like family there or something? I never really understood just supporting Israel because of your religion. I know plenty of Jewish people who are huge dicks, and most people don't go around supporting other nations because they share superficial features.

Family and ancestry. I'm not religious in the slightest, but I'm proud of my heritage and the traditions we keep (we have rad holidays!). Plus, my sister did a semester in Israel last year, and she fell in love with it. She's even considering joining the Israeli army to defend it, and many of the other kids that were on her program are also considering it/already enrolled. And when I went to visit her there, I learned it was a place that I definitely don't want anything bad happening to.

Israel has enough to worry about without another country turning against it. I doubt the Egyptians will change their stance on Israel, but I wouldn't stake my life on that. Hopefully this wave of rebellions will bring a bit more tolerance, though the revolutions aren't really of that nature at all. I figure democratic societies on the whole are more tolerant though, right? That could be a gross overstatement, though...

Well you know, it would help if they hadn't forcibly removed an entire country from there home. When you do that people kind of get pissed off.

its unlikely that egypt will turn against israel. israels got the 4th largest army in the world and uses pretty high tech wep. not to mention the us funds the military in both countries, that coupled with thw delicate system of peace treaties in place in the mid east,to name a few egypt jordan iran and isreal, its more than likely egypt would suffer pretty damn strong repercussions as a result. also these people are fighting for freedeom and liberty, they wont suffer a regime that oppresses them or entangles them in a bloody conflict.

lets not forget protests are for a real democracy and sorting out economic situation, if they get their aims sooner rather than later then elections should not cause a dictatorship. Mubarak could of retired in few years anyway and handed power over, next dictator like leader might of broken ties with Israel. Plus Egypt gets more from West in way of tourism and international funding so any government and public opinion would be stupid to turn its back on that.

Basically it is unknown at the moment, until there's a strong opposition group to enter main stream Egyptian politics, might be hard to find if over the years Mubarak suppressed rivals. When that group appears, then future of Egypt, the rest of the Middle East will be clearer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_po ... s_in_Egypt

going by wiki, ElBaradei got a peace prize with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)(peaceful use of nuclear energy, said iran bid for nuclear energy legal)) and isn't seen within domestic politics in Egypt.
Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt looks like another one, bit of a ? on them really (on support numbers in Egypt, its position on peace and violence) though might not be good news current climate. Egypts future ally set with Israel is important, since most of the international terrorism and current islamphobia/anit-semitism is fuelled by a lack of a solid fair negotiation process between Israel and Palestine. Egypt plays a important role in securing peace.

Best hope is on a fair election which won;t see any getting strong majority, but enough to sort out Egypts economic situation. Protests look peaceful.

so sounds with no step downs or changes to the constitution on fixed terms, protests still going on. BBC reporter just stated the likely hood of the army generals trying to force Mubarak out and sparking a civil war. whoever wins that probably be more of a controlled state. One tweet i saw said, government run channel said journalists in the area were in fact Israeli spies, so anti-Semitism and fear creating still runs deep there. Could get very nasty. hopefully this is miss-information and news stories getting OTT.

tho sounds like people on camels got their income from rides to tourists and were angry over lost business. rest to of violence still between people being told to cause trouble or just angry pro supporters.

yay mubarak gone, peaceful protest FTW, hopefully constitutional reforms next and fair elections (don't want military power grab), it'll change how people judge the middle east and also how to protest.
