A very small group of people (possibly just one person) sent Hasbro e-mails telling them that "derpy" means "mentally retarded", which isn't even true, but the mere suggestion of it was enough to frighten their PR department into re-editing the episode (at a no doubt considerable cost of both time and money) to remove Derpy's name, ungoogle her googly eyes, and change her voice.
It really says a lot about the lawyer-driven society we live in that even a massive corporate behemoth like Hasbro can be so easily bullied by threats from crusaders for so-called "social justice".
