Victorian is generally considered the more typical era for steampunk. Elizabethan gets more into a clockpunk
* area. Basically imagine current or even futuristic technology, except brought to life through the application of Victorian-era technical sophistication. Lots of gears, springs, thick heavy parts made of brass and copper, and of course plenty of steam-power and burning coal. The webcomic
Girl Genius is a good example, though they personally prefer the term "gaslamp fantasy" for their stuff. I'd highly recommend
The Difference Engine by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling if you'd prefer purely textual experiences. The latest
Sherlock Holmes movies with Downey Jr and Jude Law have a healthy dose of steampunk elements in them. And of course, there's
this.
The steampony movement within the general brony contingent is already fairly sizeable and growing larger, it seems, and without surprise really. In many ways, the world of MLP:FiM already has a hoof in the steampunk subgenre as it is, given their mix and frequent use of both older technology (gaslamps, coal-burning locomotives) and newer technology (movies with sound). Plus, ponies in Victorian clothing is just plain boss.
*Clockworks. Think The Girl in the Fireplace episode from Doctor Who.This will probably be the only time I'll mention it here, as I'd like to keep the account separate for now, in case I decide to make an "official" DA under my real name later. Just figured somepony (Jim) might care to know.
Oh hey, I'd already seen a couple of the other pics you put up earlier! Neat.
