Android v iphone.. FIGHT!

Postby eitlobsaboo » Mon Apr 30, 2012 12:21 am

Okay so this isn't spam and I'm actually need to know some info..

My 5 year old Nokia is slowly giving me the shits I've decided to get a new phone. I'm not keen on the new Nokias.. they just don't have the popularity and backing like they used too. So it's either an android or iphone and I have no experience with either.

So what do you guys use and what are your opinions on this. I need a phone that's good with the net, FREE GPS navigation and helpful apps.. Don't care to much about music or games..

Android user here, and I'm pretty fond of it. I can't give you too many technical specs on it, but I know that when it comes to apps, Droids are generally preferred because they allow any company to make apps for the phone. Apple is pretty restrictive on what company works on the iPhone, so there's some limitations there.

I am biased towards the iPhone for obvious reasons. But if built-in free turn by turn GPS directions is a prereq with you, you're going to have to get an Android phone, since the iPhone doesn't include that (although there are plenty of cheap 3rd party apps that provide it).

Yeah, I have an iphone, so that's the only one I can speak to since I've never actually seen an android phone, let alone used one.
The Google Maps app is free on the iphone, but any proper turn-by-turn GPS will be "get what you pay for". The app store does have a few "free" GPS apps, but I wouldn't expect too much from them. The more reliable TomTom, etc ones runs upwards of 50 bucks. That's for US/CAnada maps, I don't know what the Australian options are. Check the itunes app store website for prices and descriptions.

Yeah its one of the reasons why i've held onto my nokia for so long, is because how handy the navigation is.
I could just get a dedicated gps for the car but why pay more when its free.
I'm being peer presured into an iphone though as 99% of my friends have one.
4G is fairly new and the iphone doesn't support it.. So should I hold out a bit longer till the iphone5?

Well, first you should ask yourself what you need in the phone (are you going to be using a lot of e-mail, etc.), and what you want from the phone (durability, fun apps, variety, customization, etc.). After that, do a simple cost-based analysis of the two and whatever plan you're on and/or will get, and then decide.

I ended up getting a blackberry and while my previous model was apparently a little buggy, I got no complaints with the replacement.

I have an iphone 4, so until just this moment I forgot the best reason you should get a 4S. Siri.

I pretty much I just used the net, maps, camera and a flash light app.. It was all my phone was really capable of doing..
I accessed email and social media via the browser not some stupid simplified app.
I heard something about Siri being useless here because she only knew american data..

Dont worry about Siri, my housemate has one, half the features don't work in Australia and the other half of the time it doesn't understand our accents. It's basically worthless.

[edit] Damm you post jacked me, yeah all the 'find something near me' stuff doesn't work, it only has records of american buisnesses and shit. It also has a really hard time understanding anything you say unless you put on a fake american accent.

If that's the case, get an android. I have one. It works great and the gps is top-notch. I've used it for driving and it works exactly as you think it would.

OK for sure it has to be an android. Not becuase i am saying it but jsut becuase it is better. At the moment i am working on a program which will hook my sony ericsson android to my laptop via bluetooth so that i can almost control my entire desktop from my phone screen. Ok it might be a useless software but the thing is that androids let you do things. You can change things you do not like etc. Iphones like most i things, dont have that option. Buy an android . you wont regret it

I can't be the only one noticing newcomers making the bulk (if not all) of their posts not only in this thread, but on the subject of a smart phone. It must be part of...

THE CONSPIRACY!!!
