Layout and Design

This section contains a small sample of my design work. You will needAdobe Reader to view the PDF files.
YES Mag
Below is a small sample of the layout work I have done as the graphic designer for YES Mag, a Canadian children's science magazine with a circulation of approximately 22,000. All of these page layouts were created using Adobe's InDesign publishing software.
Catch the Aloha Spirit... at a pool near you!
This article -- about a new kind of artificial wave pool -- is one of the first major features I designed for YES Mag. I also drew the illustrations for the "Surfboard Evolution" and "Types of Waves" sidebars.

Tsunami!
Doing an article like this for a children's magazine was a real challenge. The layout needed to be appropriately sober, but not maudlin or morbid. It also needed to be simple as the magazine's usual art direction style could allow, so as not to distract from the power of the images.

How Smart?
I love doing these kind of articles. Most of the information is presented through diagrams, which gave me a lot more freedom when creating the layout.

315 Magazine
Below are some samples of my contributions as a writer and production designer for 315 Magazine, a print publication of the University of Victoria's Professional Writing Department. All layout work was done using Quark Express publishing software.
Senior Pirates
This feature article was my major written contribution to the magazine. I was also responsible for this article's layout and accompanying illustration.

GVECC Powerpoint Presentations
While contracting for the Greater Victoria Early Childhood Coalition, I designed a series of PowerPoint shows for coalition members to use in their presentations to the public. I can't reproduce the entire presentations here, but click on either of the images to the right to view a sample slide.

Web Design
Below are links to some of the websites I have worked on.

www.samandfuzzy.com
Sam and Fuzzy
The home of my online comic and shop for original art and t-shirts. I designed the layout and created all of the content. I also coded the front page, gallery and shop, while my friend Ashton coded the comic archive and forum.
Clan Bubbles
Another website where I was responsible for the design and layout. Coding by Ashton Cummings.

bubbles.nothsa.com
Also, the online portfolio site you are viewing now was designed and coded entirely by myself.
