Sam and Fuzzy Q & A:  Font Edition
Got a question you want answered? Just drop me an email with "Q & A" in the subject line!

"Are we going to see President Dog again before November 8th?" -Sara

He will probably make an appearance sometime between then and now. I don't think he can afford not to! I've been reading a lot of articles about the election, and he doesn't appear to be polling very well.

"How did you handle getting/choosing/using fonts for your comic?  From what I understand, font choices are a concern for a cartoonist (beyond aesthetics) because some have costs, and some are free, and some have licensing agreements/fees you need to handle.  What would you recommend for someone looking to get into webcomics?" -ND

The dialogue font used in my comic is actually a custom-made one, built by a helpful reader using samples of my own writing! My primary style concern at the time was maintaining consitency with older Sam and Fuzzy comics, which were all hand-lettered.

There are a lot of good fonts out there! Unless you're really picky or looking for something really particular, you probably don't need to resort to licensing a pay font... especially if you are just starting out. Blambot -- one of the more popular professional comic font creators -- has a number of fonts that they make freely available to all independent comics, even if those comics are generating revenue. And in the event your work ever gets picked up by a big publisher... well, if that happens, you'll probably be able to afford the licensing fee!

"What did Garcia in Sin's Gambit do to be turned into a monitor?" -CJ

The cockiest decision any comic character could make... he dared to position himself in a panel in need of a punchline.

That's a wrap for this week, team! See you on Monday!

Aw nuts

To pre-emptively answer the question ahead of time: yes, the robots eat! The real question is, does Unit 01 build any of them with nut allergies?

If you've got any other questions for me, though -- about the comic, comics in general, or the world beyond -- just fire 'em my way in an email with Q and A in the subject line! I'll be answering my next batch of questions this Friday.

In other news, I drew a new bonus pin-up comic-y type thing based on the suggestions and votes of my Patreon backers, staring long-absent cast members Andrea and Alexa. It's a little cheeseball, but I think it turned out kinda cute! Pin-Ups are one of the three types of backer-suggested pieces I draw over there, along with fan art and goofy Sam and Fuzzy dress-up/mash-up pieces. It's my way of saying thanks to my backers, and also giving myself a regular excuse to draw bonus stuff.

If you are so inclined, you can see the full thing over on the public part of my Patreon activity feed! (And of course, if you like this kind of silly pin-up art, I've made two e-books full of it.)

Come back on Friday for more comics and a new round of Q and A!

Expo'd out

Well, another Edmonton Expo has come and gone! Thanks to everyone who swung by the booth and said hi.

Today, we're doing our traditional post-Edmonton return drive through the rockies. But while we do that... here! Have a comic on me. The next one arrives Wednesday. See you then!
