Superhero Sketched Off
Last Friday's "Superhero Sketch-Off", where I drew Sam and Fuzzy-styled superheroes live based on reader suggestions, was a ton of fun! In the end, I managed to draw 33 pieces before succumbing to exhaustion. You can view a gallery of them all by clicking the image below!
As with previous Sketch-Offs, I am making all the original art available for $25 per piece. About half the drawings were already scooped up by folks watching on Friday, but the rest are ready for loving homes. Just look in the gallery to find out which ones are still available, and email me if you see one you'd like!
Anime Revolution starts this Friday! I hope to see a bunch of you there.
It's Superhero Twitter Sketch-Off Day! Starting at Noon (PST), you can tweet or email me your suggestions for ways I could:
- Turn one or two Sam and Fuzzy characters into brand new superheroes! (You suggest the powers/style/etc.)
- Turn one or two Sam and Fuzzy characters into existing superheroes! (Or villains)
- Redesign an existing superhero as "Sam and Fuzzy"-styled character! (Like my infamous Ninja Mafioso Batgirl.)
I will pick my favourite suggestions, draw them live on livestream, and post the finished drawings on twitter! I will draw one batch starting at Noon PST, and another batch in the evening starting at 7pm.
And as always, I'll be selling the finished drawings for $25 each. But if you'd like to buy the drawing based on your idea, or any of the other drawings you see, be sure to email or tweet me right away, because I sell them first come first serve and they often go pretty quickly!
SEE YOU ON THE INTERNET, friends.
Sam and Fuzzy Q & A: Crime Edition
Got a question you want answered? Just drop me an email with "Q & A" in the subject line!
"Were you planing an Olympics-themed draw-a-thon? Sam cowering in fear before a demonic pommel horse would be awesome as pie." -Zoinkitty
Unfortunately, picking that theme would probably reveal my complete ignorance about the Olympics and the various events it contains. (All the sports in Monday's Penny Arcade are real, right?)
"Did you introduce Cooper and Morris in order to pass the Bechdel test?" -Root
No! But I did introduce them as part of a conscious effort to stop making my supporting characters male "by default", which was something that was really bothering me about my earlier work at the time.
When you are a cartoonist who needs to design new characters on a regular basis, it's very easy to slip into lazy defaults. Maybe everyone is a dude. Or everyone is white. Or everyone is the same height. Or the same weight. Or everyone has the same hips, the same nose, the same head-shape, whatever! At best you're just being a lazy designer, and at worst you are giving in to (hopefully) unconscious personal prejudices.
Real life people are always more interesting and diverse than the people you are drawing. You have to find your lazy crutches and burn them.
"What’s your opinion on Chaos? You know, the cute pet things last seen in Sonic Adventure 2 Battle? Were they a good thing to work for? Were they just useless distractions? Should they put them back into Sonic games? Is this too many questions? You’re a Sonic the Hedgehog fan, you can answer all those." -Alex
I think the Chaos were cute, and I had no problem with them from a narrative perspective... but boy, did I hate taking care of the little bastards. I'd never played a artificial-life-raising game like that before Sonic Adventure, but I quickly learned that I hated the genre. I did discover, however, that I quite enjoyed Chao-hurling!
(Chao-hurling is an Olympic sport, right?)
That's a wrap for this week, team. Come back on Monday for our next comic!
Sketch-Off this Friday!
I am doing one of my "Twitter Sketch-Offs" this Friday! For those who don't know, sketch-offs are where I live-draw pictures like these based on your tweeted (or emailed) suggestions, and then let any interested folks purchase the finished drawings.
This time around, I am in the mood to draw some superheroes! So I am looking for you to suggest one of two things:
a) a style/powerset to give to an existing Sam and Fuzzy character (ie: Fuzzy with ice powers, Fig Pig with laser vision, Sam with ultra high-speed typing)
b) an existing superhero for me to reimagine/redesign into how I'd draw them if they were a Sam and Fuzzy character
I'll be livedrawing all these suckers this Friday -- one batch in the afternoon starting at 1PM PST, and one batch in the evening starting at 7PM PST. You can send me your suggestions then (not now please!) by twitter or email, and watch the finished drawings come in on twitter and livestream. And like previous times, I'll be selling the finished drawings for $25, either to the original concept suggester or to the first other person who asks. It should be fun!
It's probably about that time for me to remind everyone about the (relatively) new Skull Panda webcomic, a terrifying collaboration between myself and infamous alternative cartoonist Rikk Estoban. (The redesigned Sam and Fuzzy site will have a proper permanent link to it, but until that's ready to go live, I'll just keep harping about it down here now and then.)
Thanks for all the kind words about the new story, everyone! I'm thrilled to see so many of you are as into it as I am. There is a lot of interesting stuff ahead!
