Imminent Roleplay

It is true, my friends... this Wednesday, we'll be launching our kickstarter for The Underground: a tabletop role-playing game set in the world of Sam and Fuzzy!

The folks from Damocles Thread Development and I have been working on this project for nearly two years now. They've focused on creating a unique gameplay system tailored to the style of my work, where a character's ability to mentally deal with weirdness is as important as their ability to physically deal with force.  Meanwhile, I've been busy writing and illustrating a massive guide to the Sam and Fuzzy universe, expanding on the characters, organizations, and world in a way that I seldom get to in the comic itself.

Our goal was to make The Underground double as both a fun game and a cool illustrated guidebook... something that would have appeal whether you were a Sam and Fuzzy reader, a tabletop gamer, or both. And I think we've pulled it off! With you're support, I think we'll be able to make something pretty special.

Our kickstarter goes live on Wednesday, and with it comes more info about our game mechanics, more cool artwork, and one really awesome live-action ninja mafioso battle film. But in the meantime, here's a look at some of our game's playable species! (And yes, that included Buddy Bears):

Sam and Fuzzy Q & A:  Baking Edition
Got a question you want answered? Just drop me an email with "Q & A" in the subject line!

"I've got it!  I know what [The teaser image on Wednesday] means: 'Baking performance!' You're starting your own cooking show, right?" -Issac

Alas, no! And further apologies to anyone hoping my next project was "bread wedding" -- a tale of starcrossed loaves -- or "bun play" -- a very specifically themed adult comics debut. Maybe next time!

But the most popular guess was "roll play"... and accurately so, because yes... we have indeed been preparing to crowdfund a tabletop role-playing game set in the Sam and Fuzzy universe.

And to make things even crazier, we also worked with stunt team to make a pretty incredible live-action Sam and Fuzzy film for our kickstarter video, which both explains the game's mechanics and facilitates the staging and filming of real life Ninja Mafioso fights. Like, seriously! Here is a brief teaser trailer:

I'll be posting more info about this project as we loom closer to the launch of the kickstarter. But long story short, it's shaping up to be a fun, unique game that also doubles as an art-filled encyclopedia to the world of Sam and Fuzzy. More to share next week... including some of the art I've drawn for the project.

"I assume that you named Sam after yourself, since you began drawing Sam and Fuzzy long ago for fun.  Since Sam and Fuzzy itself has now practically become your livelihood, do you ever wish you'd gone with a different main character name?" -Jared

Yes. All the time! Especially because people (naturally) assume the Sam character is intended to be autobiographical... or at least based on my own personality. He isn't, and hasn't been since before the webcomic started. But I can't exactly blame anyone for guessing he is!

"In The Pitch, Pt. 4, it is said that officer Morris is a person of colour (presumably black). However, here she is shown to be the sister of Emily Dupont (and thus also Gertie's aunt). And while Morris do look somewhat black, neither Emily or Gertie do, nor is Gertie coloured accordingly in your coloured versions of her. Have I misunderstood something (I am a recent convert who may have raced throgh the archives at too high a speed); is it a preparation for a future plot-twist; or is it simply that The Pitch isn't canon?" -Steen

To be honest, there are so many possible reasons why Morris could have a niece that looks white -- interracial marriage or remarriage, adoption, or even just normal familial skintone range -- I went a long time without commiting to one. It's like, how does someone as Scandanavian-looking as Hazel wind up with the last name Kim? Well, there's a bunch of possible ways. But since it doesn't really matter to the story, it's unlikely I'll ever get into it.

The one thing I did finally commit to --  the first and only time I ever had to draw Emily Dupont in colour -- is that Emily has lighter skin than her sister, and the Gert has lighter skin than her mother. (Although in more recent times, I have taken to generally drawing Gert a little darker than, say, Sam or Aaron.) So, infer from that whatever you like! Unless I ever need to write a story about Gertrude's father or grandparents, I'm not really going to sweat it.

We return on Monday with a new comic! See you then, team.

Delicious

All right! Here we are in November already, somehow. How did that happen? Where am I?

I know I've been teasing one last big new Sam and Fuzzy project before the end of the year. It's a collaborative project being work on by both myself and others for well over a year. I'm still not quite ready to stop all this vague insinuation and reveal what it is. But here is a clue:

More on Friday!
