Single Tear

A moment, friends, to curse the dreaded Ice Shriekbat, which has foiled yet another attempt to complete Metroid Prime's creature index. The little buggers only appear in one room, at one time, before disappearing forever. And they look exactly like regular Shriekbats! How would you even know they were different? How would you even know?

Feel my pain!

We return on Friday, with less whining and more comics and Q and As! See you then.

Wal...

Our non-North American friends should replace "Waldo" with "Wally". I'm not sure why they changed his name when they brought him over here. Publishing companies can make some strange demands!

Relevant back-link of the day:Fuzzy and Hazel's first discussed the underground in this strip!

Sam and Fuzzy Q & A: Tunnel Edition
Got a question you want answered? Just drop me an email with "Q & A" in the subject line!

"What is with Fuzzy's eyebrows?" -Ben

Fuzzy's eyebrows were swiped 100% wholesale from Jeff Smith's Bone back in 1994. Their appearance has kind of evolved away from that since then, but Smith's work was definitely the source. I thought it might look good if I shamelessly swiped those floating browlines and slapped them on to Fuzzy's design... so I did. No apologies. (In my defense, I was 12 years old at the time.)

"What color is Sam's hair supposed to be? In the comic it looks blonde, but it looks brown on the poster." -Sandra

I usually colour Sam's hair brown. But publishing a black and white comic leads to a lot of unique reader colour interpretations! (Especially in my work, where I don't really use greytones to suggest lighter or darker colours.) I've heard of folks picturing Sam as a blonde, a brunette, and a redhead. A few even think he has blue hair, probably because of the Sonic resemblance!

Skin colour is another common diverging point. I've seen some fan colourations that make Sam's nose a distinctly darker or reder shade than the rest of his skin, almost like a clown. That's something I never would have even thought of! I've seen Alexa colourized to look Japanese, and Lance coloured to look black. And I'm sure there are more than a few people who picture Dev as being white... especially if they don't recognize her name. But I don't think there is anything, like, profound about these 'mistakes'. It's all just imagination and guesswork! Hazel is half Korean, but that's never been mentioned anywhere in the strip. So how would you know? Maybe you picture her as being Sweedish!

And what colour is Fuzzy? Is he a brown bear? Is he white, like a polar bear? Or is he a bright, unnatural colour, like a care bear? Conciously or unconciously, everyone fills in their own colours. And it is always fascinating to see how different those colours can be. I think it's kind of cool!

"Why is it that you like to draw tunnels?" -Ikatsume

I guess I just like drawing anything that can be represented with big, stylized chunks of black and white texture! The trees and bushes earlier this week, the grrbil tunnels from "Help Wanted", the dark brick alley from "Frame of Mind"... the comic archive is littered with attempts. I like drawing tunnels in particular because I don't usually screw them up.

That's a wrap for this week! We return on Monday. See you then!
