Conning Around

Team! I am doing my last two conventions of the year this month.

The first is a new one... Rose City Comic-Con in Portland, on September 21st and 22nd! I've never been able to do a Portland show before -- Stumptown almost always conflicts with Calgary Expo -- so I'm really looking forward to checking this one out. It's run by the same folks responsible for the excellent Emerald City Comic-Con in Seattle, so I expect great things!

My last show of the year is the Edmonton Expo, on September 28th and 29th. I went to the first Edmonton show last year and was really impressed, so I'm really looking forward to going back. (Plus, I always love that beautiful drive through the rocky mountains!)

After that, I'll be taking a few months off from shows. Between Sam and Fuzzy, our upcoming ShiftyLook comic, and all the bookplates I'm making for kickstarter backers who bought artist-edition books... I'll have plenty to draw!

Mashed Potatoes

Metaphors are hard!

Tomorrow is my birthday, friends. And with it comes the greatest gift of all... Rayman Legends is finally coming out!

How excited was I when I heard about Rayman Legends, the sequel to one of my favourite video games ever? So excited that I went insane preordered a Wii U entirely to play this game. The good news, for those of you who did not join me on that front, is that the game was delayed a year and is now coming out for pretty much every system under the sun. And although the other console and PC versions do lose the incredible touchscreen environment-manipulation co-op mode, they still retain all the platforming goodness, brutally difficult bonus levels, and gorgeous 2D artwork.

Anyhow, if you like run-and-jump games, this thing is a must own. It is exactly what I imagined future video games would be like when I was 12.

Sam and Fuzzy Q & A: Travesty Edition
Got a question you want answered? Just drop me an email with "Q & A" in the subject line!

"Do you still accept fan art?" -Rowan

Once upon a time, years and years ago, I tried to maintain a Sam and Fuzzy fanart gallery here on the site. These days, I don't really maintain any kind of gallery on the site, even of my own work... services like deviantart and tumblr kind of made it unnecessary. But I still love seeing the fanart that folks post, and sharing the particularly good stuff with other readers through my own tweets, tumbls and blog posts.

"Lord Varney is named after Varney the Vampire, the not-too-well-known vampire who actually predates Dracula in fiction, right? That's a pretty deep cut vampire joke right there." -Alex

He is! The idea is that he is the real-life vampire that inspired the fictional character. (The real Varney, as you can see, never gave in to the temptation to throw himself in a volcano.) You can all thank Shannon for informing me about the Varney character... I'd never heard of him until she did!

"In this strip Sin seems to be using the word "Travesty" as a synonym for "Tragedy" (which it's not), but considering the ACTUAL meaning of the word, is it ironic that he's kind of, unintentionally, using it right?" -Matt

Not to put too much stock in Sin's mastery of the English language, but he is totally using the word correctly! Sin is (pretending to be) disgusted by the farcical decision making of the committee. It's a travesty in the same way that a baffling court decision is a "travesty of justice". Words!

That's a wrap for this week, team. See you on Monday!
