Contest!

Only four days 'til Gottacon, Victoria-ites. I know, I know... my first appearance of the year is already upon us. My "con season" starts earlier and ends later with every successive year I do this... good thing I enjoy it! And it's always fun to visit my old hometown, which is the home of the most long-time Sam and Fuzzy readers on earth. (From it's pre-webcomic, University-of-Victoria-student-newspaper days!)

In other news, did you know Topatoco is having a photo contest? They want to see your best photos of you or your loved ones clothed-in, brandishing or otherwise positioned near your favourite Sam and Fuzzy swag. (Or indeed, the swag of any Topatoco artist!) There are fabulous prizes, but everyone who sends in a usable photo gets a certificate good for $10 off any Topatoco order. Woo!

Sam and Fuzzy Q & A: Side Boob Edition
Got a question you want answered? Just drop me an email with "Q & A" in the subject line!

"Just a quick question: is the last panel from comic 1683 showing...heum....a side boob? (with bonus pointy nipple)" -Pierrick

No! It's actually the back of Ms. Potts head. (With bonus little cowlick-y hair thing.) So I'm afraid you're mistaken... unless it turns out she's got a secret third boob on the back of her head.

Aw crap, I just spoiled Monday's comic!

"You might have already answered this but I was rereading Noosehead today and in strip 950 Mr. Black said "My the resemblance is uncanny". Did he know Eric or is he referring to Fuzzy looking like a bear?" -Justin

Mr. Black didn't know Eric, no. He was actually referring to Fuzzy's resemblance to the robot Fuzzy bodies that Mr. Sin had in the secret basement of Sin Towers. (Which Fuzzy later found and put to good use.)

Black became very well-informed about Sin's history and true nature while under his employ. He was even the one responsible for nicknaming him a "space gopher"! He'd be the absolute go-to guy to ask about Sin's secrets if, you know, he wasn't dead and everything.

"I almost dropped my coffee when I realized this, but comic 1680 has to be a callback to the gay ninja stereotype comic, right?" -Alex

I'd say "inspired by" more than "a callback to", if that makes any sense.

When I was plotting this story, I knew I wanted to whittle down the ninjas until only Danielle was left standing to fight. So, I started brainstorming possible ways for everyone to be eliminated. And while I was doing that, I remembered that old "stereotype" strip... which gave me the idea for the route I wound up taking.

BUT... I only used that idea because I thought it was the funniest and most interesting option, and fit well with the new characters I was writing. The fact that it also worked as a fun callback was just a delightful bonus... and if I'd come up with something else I liked more, I'd have abandoned the callback potential without much guilt. So it was more fortuitous than intentional, if you know what I mean!

That's a wrap for this week, team! See you on Monday.

First con of the year

Victoria friends! I will be visiting my old hometown in a bit over a week for this year's Gottacon. Me and my pal Alina will be at the show all three days, hanging out in a booth on the floor peddling comic stuff and drawing dumb things. Be aware: Gottacon is a 24/7 convention, and it's long hours last year were indirectly responsible for insanity-induced creation of ponises.

By the way: over in the online Sam and Fuzzy swag store, we're clearing out a couple of our older shirt designs. Insatiable Reader shirts are now only $12, as are X vs. Y (although we only have a couple of sizes left of that one). If you want to nab one of either design, now is most likely your last chance... so be aware and act appropriately! HARD SELL COMPLETE
